iPhoto, Aperture & Mac OSX
For a few good reasons and some just plain stubbornness, I've not upgraded from High Sierra (10.13.x) to Mojave (10.14.x) Primarily as I have not wanted to go through the pain of migrating my 100K + images from a shared iPhoto & Aperture library to Photos. I've played with Photos a bit, and am not impressed, the interface is not intuitive (to me), and my sense is Apple wants you to use it so they can sell you cloud space. Also, the editing capabilities I have in Aperture are not available, burning, dodging, spot fixes for contrast and other fine work. I do most editing in iPhoto, but use Aperture for more detailed stuff. I'm not interested in getting into Adobe's pay-by-the-month forever business model either. It appears that iPhoto & Aperture both still run under Mojave, but the new Catalina (10.15.x) is going to break them. I'm not thrilled about being two generations behind in OS, so may bite the bullet and move to Mojave. I am starting to see creakiness in iPhoto, it crashes more often, and needs rebuilding more frequently than I remember, it seems to be having random troubles reading my SD card fully, not sure if that's a card issue or the software. Some of this may be an issue with the size of my library too. Would appreciate any wisdom of the group in next steps, Thanks

I understand the reluctance to go down the Adobe subscription model, however I find that the cost , compared to my pentax equipment investment is relatively minor and the convenience of the programs on the Mac make it worthwhile for me. Good luck on the upgrade

currently running Mojave and have never used iPhoto, Aperture, or Photos... nor Lightroom... I've been using Luminar since its introduction and love it - no monthly fee, no cloud fees.. for sharing purposes, I do pay for Flickr annually, but only because I keep more than a thousand dhots there...

I replaced aperture with Affinity Photo and use it as an add in for Photos when I want to do more advanced editing than can be done in standalone Photos. Affinity is available as a download form the App store and upgrades are free. Currently my iMac is running Mojave but I will go ahead and up it to Catalina. The latest free upgrade to Affinity keeps it compatible with all of the latest versions of Mac OS. So far I have not had any software issues with Affinity or Photos on my Mac. With this combo there are no mandatory or reoccurring fees and cloud storage is an option if you want to use it. It is not mandatory.

For my K-1 I always use Digital Camera Utility for RAW and do the rest in Affinity Photo. If you don´t like Digital Camera Utility I would recommend Rawtherapee and Darktable. You can also 'develop' RAW i Affinity. Affinity is a very capable software at a good price.

I absolutely loved Aperture 3, however through confusion on my part as to operating system upgrades and changes, my version of Aperture stopped working when I purchased a new iMac 4 years ago; I had never upgraded anything with my original version of Snow Leopard; stupid on my part. I never really used iPhoto and neither liked it or had any negative remarks about it, either. I installed Lightroom 4 years ago and began to love it, too. I also use 3 DXO programs. I use Apple's Photos, too, and really enjoy it. I never understand the criticism of Photos as it just works and interfaces nicely in the Apple world. I just installed Catalina operating system yesterday and all seems well with both Lightroom and Photos. I have a 3TB drive and 3TB backup, so I have nothing to do with Cloud services; all my images are stored on my drives.

I agree! Photos in its current version will suffice for 90 to 95% of my needs, for the rest, its Affinity photo. Since I posted my previous post, I updated my iMac to Catalina. The update went well, no problems or glitches.

Another “vote” for Photos and Affinity Photo. This pairing meets my needs completely.

Thanks to all, some good ideas, I was not aware of Affinity, will look into it. I do shoot RAW 90% of the time and use iPhoto for 95% of my cataloging and processing. K3 & K5 mostly, an istDS and a K200D that get hauled out occasionally, and sometimes I use my iPhone camera, To be honest, it's mostly stubbornness....

When I pair Apple Photos with Affinity there is a message about having to ‘flatten’ the image owing to the file size after editing. Anyone know what this is about? Only other thing that concerns me about Photos is Adobe Bridge can’t seem to read the Photos library. I have Lightroom 6 and figured if I update to Catalina and LR 6 failed, at least Bridge reads the LR catalogue better than the Finder.

I am also on High Sierra. My main programs are GraphicConverter, Photos and Affinity Photo. GraphicConverter has many capabilities from browsing to editing photos. Photos I mainly use to transfer photos I want on my iPhone and iPad. I do this via iTunes so I don't have to use iCloud for my photos. Another image editing app I have that is easy to use and inexpensive is called Acorn. If the size of the library is an issue for iPhoto it is possible to have multiple libraries.
